feat(calls)!: unified call commands, SIP trunks and call settings - #9
Conversation
Add the calls command family on the unified Calls API: place, accept with an optional exclusive claim or join, decline, leave one connection, end, invite, watch session call updates as JSON Lines, carry call audio as raw PCM, and read or replace session call settings. Socket commands use only the public CallsClient surface of @polymorfa/calls. Client tokens act as their own participant and cannot pass --participant or use call settings. Conflict errors keep their stable code, so call_claimed and call_not_ringing exit with code 4 and are visible in JSON. call reject stays on the Linked Device session route; both reject commands now name each other in their help. Pin @polymorfa/sdk to a65291c and adapt to its contract changes: Customer profiles no longer take a phone number, pairing links no longer take a locale or theme, and widget output shows callback URLs instead of redirect URIs. BREAKING CHANGE: customer create/update drop --phone and --clear-phone, and customer pairing-link create drops --locale and --theme.
Add the sip-trunk commands and --inbound-route, --sip-trunk and --sip-claim on calls settings set, which now keeps settings you do not pass. Pin the SDK commit that adds Client.sipTrunks (54d2518, unpushed; lockfile not regenerated).
Use a valid project ID in the SIP trunk examples.
calls settings set sends the revision it read and exits 4 on a conflict. Pin SDK ca01925 (unpushed; lockfile not regenerated).
The API now keeps omitted settings, so calls settings set no longer reads first. Pin SDK dae9004 (unpushed; lockfile not regenerated).
Add --calls-enabled to calls settings set and show the switch in settings output. Pin SDK fa1cb37 (unpushed; lockfile not regenerated).
Pin SDK 6d02b25 (unpushed; lockfile not regenerated).
The SDK commit only re-pins its contract snapshots; lockfile not regenerated.

Reject identical media input and output paths
When --input and --output identify the same file, this write stream opens with the default truncating mode before the input stream is consumed. The source PCM is therefore erased, the call sends no audio, and the user's original file is irrecoverably overwritten; reject equivalent input/output files before opening either stream.

Fixed in 05449b5. calls media now refuses --input and --output that name the same file (same resolved path, or same device and inode when both exist, which covers symlinks and hard links) with a configuration error (exit 2) before either stream is opened. - is not treated as a file. Covered by a test that also checks the input file is unchanged and no connection is opened.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Already fixed in 05449b5 and still in place at 733efa8. calls media checks --input against --output before it opens either stream: same resolved path, or same device and inode via stat. The inode check also catches symlinks and hard links. It fails with a configuration error (exit 2). The test "refuses --input and --output naming the same file before opening either" in test/commands/calls-sockets.test.ts covers four spellings of the same file: the path itself, a ./ variant, a symlink and a hard link. It asserts that the input bytes are unchanged and that no socket was opened.

Handle input stream errors before waiting for a call
If --input names a missing or unreadable file, createReadStream can emit its error immediately, but its async iterator is not started until a call connects and no error listener is attached here. While waiting for an inbound call—or during socket setup—this becomes an unhandled EventEmitter error instead of the CLI's structured configuration error; attach error handling or preflight the file as soon as the stream is created and propagate the failure through the command.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.

Fixed in 05449b5. --input is now opened before connecting; a missing or unreadable file fails with a configuration error (exit 2) and no connection is opened. The read stream also has an error listener from the start, so a later read error stops the call and exits 2 through the command's error path instead of becoming an unhandled stream error. Tests cover a missing file and a file that opens but fails on read.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Confirmed fixed in 05449b5 and still in place at 733efa8. --input is opened with fs/promises open() before the command connects, so a missing or unreadable path fails at once with a configuration error. An error listener goes on the read stream as soon as it is created, so a later read failure stops the call and comes back as a configuration error instead of an unhandled error event. Tests: "refuses a missing --input file before connecting" and "stops with a configuration error when --input cannot be read".
… media - calls settings set: add --expected-revision; a stale revision exits 4 (state_conflict). get/set print the settings revision. - calls media --place: finish when the call ended before placement returned. - calls media: on Ctrl-C during an answer or join, wait for it to settle and then leave, so the platform does not keep this client as a participant.

End calls created after cancellation
When Ctrl-C arrives while client.place() is pending, onAbort sees no active call and marks the operation cancelled, but the continuation after this await still attaches the newly created call without rechecking finished or stopping. The command then disconnects without calling call.end(), so the outbound call can continue ringing despite the user cancelling; recheck cancellation after placement returns and explicitly end the call.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in 0a34d6a. If the command was cancelled while client.place() was in flight, it now ends the placed call (call.end(), errors ignored) before disconnecting and does not attach it or report it as placed. A new test aborts during the placement request and checks that the call is ended with DELETE /messaging/voip/calls/{id} and the result is cancelled.

Cancel the pending stdin iterator when the call closes
With --input - and a long-lived producer such as a microphone or tail -f, this detached iterator can remain blocked awaiting the next stdin chunk after the remote call ends. pacePcm returns from its consumer loop without cancelling that read, and the command only pauses stdin, leaving the pipe handle and iterator alive so the CLI does not exit until the upstream process closes; explicitly terminate the iterator when isClosed() becomes true.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in 0a34d6a. A Node stream iterator cannot be returned while its read is pending, so the command now destroys standard input once the bridge finishes (it previously only paused it). The pending read then ends and the process exits. A new test runs the CLI as a child process with --input -, keeps its standard input open, ends the call from the server, and checks that the process exits with code 0.
- calls media --place: when Ctrl-C arrives while placement is in flight, end the placed call instead of attaching it, so the callee stops ringing. - calls media --input -: destroy standard input when the bridge finishes, so a producer that never closes it does not keep the process running.

Regenerate the lockfile for the Calls dependencies
The dependency declarations changed, but package-lock.json remains unchanged: its root package omits @polymorfa/calls and still pins @polymorfa/sdk to 8803f055.... Because .github/workflows/ci.yml runs npm ci, every clean CI or release install uses an inconsistent dependency graph and fails before the new commands can build; commit the regenerated lockfile with these dependency updates.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
